“As you are aware one of the engine modules on our prototype Class 230 caught fire during a test run last Friday. I am happy to reassure you that the Vivarail and West Coast Rail teams on board were able to get off the train without any problem, and that the train subsequently made its way to Coventry under its own power. It is planned to move it from there to Long Marston later this week.
It is now imperative for us to discover and fix the problems that caused the fire. To that end I have asked Andy Hamilton to oversee our investigations and immediately:
– Liaise with the RAIB, ORR and other interested parties.
– Produce an interim report by 13th January.
– Produce a final report by 31st January.
This is an ambitious timescale but all actions are underway and I fully expect to be in a position to update you by Monday 16th January. Of course if you have any questions in the meantime please do not hesitate to contact my office: or phone 01789 721922.
Please be assured that as a company we remain committed to building the highest quality train. We will use this incident as part of that process and we do not foresee it having any long-term impact on our plans.
