USHSR News… Time for Serious National Action on Transportation Reform

USHSR Newsletter

Climate change is a clear and present danger to the United States. It’s time for serious, comprehensive national action to solve the problem!

America and the world watched in shock as back-to-back massive hurricanes smashed into the United States – Harvey devastating Houston, and Irma leaving a vast path of destruction from the Caribbean all the way into Georgia, and beyond.

The incredible pain and suffering, loss of life, and epic destruction of property these storms are creating is clearly the most serious threat we face, far more serious than terrorism (which we’re spending many hundreds of billions fighting).

It time for the “War on Climate Change”!

It is now a moral imperative to quickly solve climate change. People are dying by the thousands! Millions of people’s lives are being destroyed. Cities and infrastructure is being wrecked. Solving climate change is now the most important mission of humanity, far more serious and deadly than terrorism. We need solutions as big and comprehensive as the problem if we are going to solve it.

We must now act on a grand scale to solve climate change, and save lives! We must rapidly change our transportation and energy systems to cut the carbon output causing this.  The debate is over
Inaction is no longer an option. The massive costs of doing nothing are adding up to way more than the solutions would cost. We must act decisively, quickly, and in a big way to solve this menace.
The only solution is to quickly change our transportation and
energy systems to rapidly reduce carbon emissions.
These images are just from the past 10 days! The costs of Harvey and Irma will certainly exceed $100 Billion in the U.S. alone.
-Hurricane Katrina (2005) cost $160 Billion
-Hurricane Sandy (2012) cost $70 Billion
-Hurricane Ike (2008) cost $34 Billion
-Hurricane Wilma (2005) cost $29 Billion

-Hurricane Andrew (1992) cost $26.5 Billion

-Hurricane Katrina (2005) – at least 1,245 people died
-Typhoon Haiyan (2013) – 10,000 people died
-Chicago Heat Wave (1988) – 10,000 people died
-Europe Heat Wave (2003) – 70,000 people died
-Russia Heat Wave (2010) – 56,000 people died
The record Atlantic hurricane season in 2005, fueled by unusually warm Atlantic Ocean temperatures, saw an unprecedented 28 named storms and a record four category 5 monster storms. Among them was Katrina, which destroyed much of New Orleans when it made landfall. Nearly 4,000 lives had been taken by the time that season ended.
We are calling on Congress, Governors, Mayors, and business leaders to take immediate action to solve climate change. This is now a moral imperative to protect the people and the planet in trouble. The time to lead is now! The time to block progress and deny climate change is over. This is a national emergency that needs major national action!
Elected officials and business leaders who stand in the way of climate progress should be held responsible for the ongoing damage, deaths, and destruction.
The only solution is to rapidly de-carbonize our economy.
We need cut our carbon output by 70% in 10 years!
There’s only 2 ways to achieve this aggressive mission quickly:
We’re calling for an emergency Climate Action Fund set up immediately by Congress with $200 Billion to fund and fast-track projects:
$100 Billion for High Speed Rail, and $100 Billion for Renewable Energy
A national high speed rail system is the fastest way to reduce carbon from our transportation and energy sectors, and is the centerpiece of a sustainable America. With trains powered by electricity generated 100% by renewables, this can cut the nation’s energy consumption and carbon output by 70% – as fast as it can be constructed!  No other solution can scale up as fast.

“The waters of the Gulf of Mexico are about 1.5 degrees warmer above what they were from 1980-2010,” Sir Brian Hoskins, Grantham Institute for Climate Change

“You can see the effects of climate change with your own eyes and scientists tell us clearly the way forward. All of us have a responsibility. All of us. Some small, some big. A moral responsibility, to accept opinions, or make decisions. I think it is not something to joke about. Those who deny it (climate change) should go to the scientists and ask them, they are very clear, very precise.” Pope Francis, the Vatican  Statement
“We believe climate change is an urgent issue that demands global action. We remain committed to doing our part.” –Satya Nadella – CEO, Microsoft
“Stopping climate change is something we can only do as a global community, and we have to act together before it’s too late.” Mark Zuckerberg – CEO, Facebook
“Climate change is real.” Elon Musk – CEO, Tesla and SpaceX
“Climate change continues to threaten our planet and global economies. As powerful platforms for change, businesses must step up to protect the planet for future generations.” Marc Benioff – CEO, Salesforce
“Climate change is real. Industry must now lead…” Jeff Immelt – CEO, General Electric
“Our biggest problem is waking up to the truth of our situation, and responding in a thoughtful, wise, effective, sustained way. That’s what we’ve got to do. And we’re
not doing that.” -California Governor Jerry Brown                           99 Reasons for Hope

We are calling on business and political leaders to take immediate action to solve climate change. Governor Brown is showing great leadership, and is a good model for other governors to get moving on the solutions. This is now a moral imperative to protect the people and the planet in trouble. The time to lead is now.
Leaders who stand in the way of progress should be held responsible for the ongoing damage, deaths, and destruction.
“Building a national high speed rail network is the fastest way to cut U.S. emissions by 70% – as fast as the train systems can be built.”

China built 12,000 miles of state-of-the-art high speed rail in less than 10 years! America can do the same.
The next generation would be justified in looking back at us and asking: What were you thinking? Couldn’t you hear what the scientists were saying? Couldn’t you hear what Mother Nature was screaming at you?”
“It is RIGHT to save humanity! It is WRONG to pollute this earth! It is RIGHT to give hope to the future generations!” -Al Gore, 2017

As we get serious about solving climate change, we must evaluate every project, every investment, and every system as to their role in either causing or solving climate change. Right now, America is still investing hundreds of billions a year in more roads, airport expansions, oil industry subsidies, and more that all make climate change worse. All our public investments need to go 100% towards systems and technologies that solve climate change and reduce carbon. High speed rail is the largest scale technology that can transform America the fastest to non-carbon transportation.
