Network Rail is set to carry safety improvements at Shepreth level crossing on Station Road in May as part of the company’s Railway Upgrade Plan.

From 10pm on Saturday 5 May, Shepreth level crossing and Station Road will be closed until 8am Monday 14 May so that engineers can carry out the upgrade. The rail line will be closed on Sunday 6 and Sunday 13 May.

During this time, work will be carried out to replace the half barriers at the level crossing with full barriers and CCTV. At this type of crossing, drivers should:

  • Be prepared to stop at the crossing
  • Understand the warnings (lights, barriers, alarms)
  • If the warnings activate, stop – unless it’s unsafe to do so
  • Remain stationary until all the warnings stop
  • Check that the exit is clear before driving across

This will improve safety and reduce delays to train services at the crossing which sees 166 trains a day which travel up to 65mph. The current census data shows that nearly 2,300 vehicles pass over the crossing every day.

Meliha Duymaz, Network Rail’s route managing director for Anglia, said:

“This is a key upgrade which will make this busy level crossing safer as part of our Railway Upgrade Plan. I’d like to thank motorists and passengers for their patience while we carry out this important work.”

A public drop-in session will take place on Wednesday 18 April at Shepreth Village Hall, Station Road, Shepreth, Royston, SG8 6PS between 4:30pm and 7pm for anyone who would like to get more information.

Station Road will be closed to all traffic from 10pm on Saturday 5 May until 8am on Monday 14 Maywhile work takes place. Traffic will be diverted via the A10 and Foxton level crossing to cross the railway.

A rail replacement service will run between Letchworth Garden City and Cambridge on Sunday 6 May and on Sunday 13 May. All London to Cambridge service will start and terminate at Letchworth Garden City with a train shuttle service also operating between Cambridge and Kings Lynn.
