Network Rail confirms start date for major upgrade of Bromham Road Bridge and timing for urgent repairs to Highfield Road Bridge

Following months of planning Network Rail will begin work on Bromham Road Bridge just north of Bedford Central Station on Monday 4 March 2019.

Work to demolish and reconstruct the bridge is scheduled to complete in 2020. However, before this work can take place the underground services running through the bridge need to be removed and relocated. Utilities work will begin on Monday 4 March.

Raising the height of Bromham Road Bridge, to provide a safe distance for the Overhead Line Equipment passing beneath, allows the line between Bedford, Kettering and Corby to be electrified as part of the Midland Main Line Upgrade.

Separately, urgent work is needed to Highfield Road bridge after a routine inspection found brickwork repairs are necessary.  These essential repairs will take place between Monday 11 and Tuesday 26 February and require a road closure and vehicle diversion whilst pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

Network Rail is inviting residents and businesses in Bedfordshire to find out more about the work on both bridges at a public information event on Friday 22 February between 15:00 and 19:00 at the Park Inn Hotel, 2 St Mary’s St, Bedford, MK42 0AR.

Network Rail workers will be on hand to answer any questions which residents may have. Network Rail is working closely with Bedford Borough Council to minimise disruption for drivers.

Those who are not able to attend can find out more about the planned work on Bromham Road Bridge by visiting nr.co.uk/bromham – which will also be regularly updated throughout the work – or calling the Network Rail National Helpline on 03457 11 41 41.
